Salient is a Texas-based company formed in 2007 to explore the pharmaceutical application of its proprietary composition of a rare, all-natural mineral. This composition has been proven to adsorb a range of toxins and inflammatory proteins commonly associated with diarrhea.
Salient’s compound, CASAD™, is envisioned to be a “platform” product effective across a spectrum of conditions from Cancer Therapy-Induced Diarrhea to infectious disease and chronic GI conditions. It also has the potential to be used as a rescue agent for other drugs with toxic side effects.
Diarrhea is a debilitating problem for people on drug therapies dealing with a variety of infectious diseases or living with inflammatory GI diseases. In some situations, diarrhea can become life threatening. At Salient, our mission is improve patient health, the probability of therapy success and recovery rates by preventing and/or treating the diarrhea often associated with diseases and therapy regimens.
Mild diarrhea is a frequent problem and is often treatable by a variety of inexpensive over-the-counter remedies.
Severe acute or chronic diarrhea, however, does not respond to simple treatments and is a debilitating problem for millions of people. It stems from a variety of causes including:
In these situations, diarrhea may become life threatening, either as a primary cause or because patients can no longer tolerate treatment due to diarrheal side effects.
With support from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Salient is actively conducting a Phase II clinical trial to test the safety and efficacy of CASAD™. This trial is currently underway at M.D. Anderson Hospital and other sites with preliminary results expected in late 2010. In this first trial, Salient is testing the efficacy of its product to prevent and treat diarrhea associated with Irinotecan®, a common part of the treatment regimen for colorectal cancer.
Salient is also in the preliminary stages of testing CASAD™ in treating diarrhea associated with Clostridium difficile and inflammatory bowel disease.
